Technical Assistance to Strengthen the COVID-19 Response in Mongolia – “Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control” (EpiC) 2022

Save the Children has been implementing a project “Technical Assistance to Strengthen the COVID-19 Response in Mongolia under Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC)”, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and administered by FHI 360 (Family Health International) since January 2022.

The project is being implemented to enhance the efforts of the Ministry of Health, and the Government of Mongolia to respond to and bolster health systems to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December 2020, the United States Government, through the USAID, provided the Government of Mongolia with 50 ventilators as a donation and they were distributed and installed across 12 facilities in eleven provinces. Save the Children in Mongolia has been coordinating with the Ministry of Health to support technical assistance to strengthen the capacity of healthcare providers on emergency critical care for COVID-19 and ventilator use and implement activities to strengthen the oxygen ecosystem and build the capacity of healthcare staff in COVID-19 management.

Project activities:
  • Support installation of 50 ventilators and consumables at selected provincial-level health facilities
  • Conduct clinical training on COVID-19 Adult Case Management for critical care doctors and nurses of district hospitals in Ulaanbaatar and general hospitals in 21 provinces
  • Adapt, translate and disseminate training modules on relevant clinical protocols and guidelines on adult COVID-19 management and bedside care for doctors and nurses involved in COVID-19 patient care.
  • Offer certified Fundamentals in Critical Care Support (FCCS) course of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) to ~40 doctors and nurses
  • Collaborate with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences to translate and host the BASIC for COVID-19 online course of the Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Strengthen the capacity of biomedical engineers and technicians to repair, maintain and track ventilators and oxygen related equipment and consumables
  • Implement rapid assessment of oxygen demand and supply and needs for essential equipment and consumables for COVID-19 patient care at Soum level health care facilities in 21 provinces
  • Implement Training of Trainers (ToT) on oxygen therapy for COVID-19 patients at the national and provincial levels
  • Implement nationwide cascade training of doctors and nurses providing COVID-19 care at Soum health care facilities
Project objective:
  • Technical assistance activities to strengthen the capacity of health care providers on emergency critical care for COVID-19 and ventilator use and maintenance
  • Strengthen the medical oxygen availability in rural Mongolia by supporting Soum or primary health care facilities
  • Build medical oxygen therapy capacity of healthcare staff providing COVID-19 care at Soum health care facilities.

  • 11 provinces and 12 Health facilities (Arkhangai, Bayankhongor, Darkhan, Dornod, Dornogovi, Govisumber, Khentii, Orkhon, Selenge, Uvurkhangai, Zavkhan)
