Strengthening The Child Protection System In Mongolia

With funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Save the Children is implementing the project, Strengthening the Child Protection System in Mongolia (2018-2022) in partnership with the Authority for Family, Child, and Youth Development and Secretariat of Coordination Council for Crime Prevention in Mongolia.

The project raises public awareness of child protection and builds the capacity of local government Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) to strengthen the child protection system and improve services in target areas of Ulaanbaatar and regional Mongolia.

Project activities:

  • To build capacity of MDT members
  • To improve coordination between MDTs from inter-sectoral child protection organizations
  • To raise public awareness of child protection
  • To summarize the lessons learned and successes of the project and present them to relevant government agencies
MDTs of Project Target Khoroos:
  • 9th, 23rd, and 27th khoroos of Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar city
  • 2nd, 10th, and 11th khoroos of Songinokhairkhan district of Ulaanbaatar city
  • 9th, 10th, and 13th khoroos of Chingeltei district of Ulaanbaatar
  • 4th bagh of Erdenebulgan soum of Arkhangai aimag, Battsengel, Chuluut, and Khairkhan soums
  • 1st bagh of Kherlen soum of Dornod aimag, Bayan-Uul, and Khalkh Gol soums

Achievements in 2019

  • Trainers conducted team training on Child Protection and Multi-disciplinary Teams to 123 members of the MDT's in the project’s target khoroos.
  • The Authority for Family, Child, and Youth Development organized regional training on the methodology developed by the project for 170 instructors and involved about 3,600 MDT members across the country.
  • 20 trainers and 80 members of MDTs participated in the Steps to Protect: Case Management training program and gained knowledge on the international best practices in child protection.
  • Five people were prepared as Country Trainers, 24 people as Program Facilitators of the Positive Disciplining in Everyday Parenting program. A total of 15 such programs were organized in 2019 involving 196 parents and caretakers in Ulaanbaatar city, Arkhangai, and Dornod aimags. Those parents and caretakers are now aware of positive disciplining methods that they can apply in their everyday parenting.
  • The project organized an advocacy event National Spank Out Day in collaboration with 16 target soums, baghs, and khoroo joint teams. With the motto “Let’s set good examples for your children!”, the event reached out to more than 7,000 children, more than 6.000 adults and the wider community.
  • In total, 206 teachers and staff participated in capacity building meetings, training, and methodological workshops, and adopted a policy of ensuring child safety.
  • 136 children aged 7-19 participated in circus skills training by the Social Circus.
